Story: The Aristocrat of Crime Detection. Once a master jewel thief, now a master of detection, John Mannering (alias, the Baron) was baffled. It looked like a simple jewel robbery-until the thief was kidnapped. It looked like an easy case for the Baron-until he was framed for a multiple murder. It looked like the Baron had better work fast-before a bizarre crime ring had him slowed down...permanently

Extract: ' Kill the Baron! The roar of the shot and a fierce blow on Mannering's head came simultaneously. But he didn't lose consciousness. He opened the door and began to run. His mouth was open but he couldn't make a sound, it was like being in the grip of a nightmare.

He wanted to get help for the girl, help for himself, but his head was a black, screaming bag, and he couldn't think. He staggered as he ran, felt as if his head were splitting, and was conscious only of the sense of movement. The Baron was wounded-but the girl might be dead... .'

Story: The Mask of Sumi had been worn by the newly crowned rulers of Sumi for hundreds of years, but now the princes no longer ruled that small oriental country. And someone with an eye for profit as well as beauty was arranging for the sale of the Sumi Crown jewels. In England, John Mannering-otherwise known as the Baron-was waiting for the jewels, when murder stepped in, twice! And Mannering found himself in the midst of some very messy oriental politics-and dangerously close to dying.

Extract: Melody Yesling, alias Mary Yates, sat in her cabin and stared at the Mask of Sumi. Its beauty was beyond question, yet there was something repellent about it. She stared at it fascinated, then looked away from the mask into the mirror. She was shocked by her own pallor. It was absurd, but the mask had that effect on her. She hated it.

"I need a drink!" she exclaimed, and rang for her steward. A moment later there was a tap at the door and the man came in with her drink. When he had gone, she drank half the whisky in one gulp, then sipped the rest slowly. She felt tired. Perhaps half an hour's sleep would do her good. She slipped out of her dress, yawned, and got on the bed. Soon she was asleep. Soon, she was dead...

Story: A Work of Murder. John Mannering-the Baron-is normally fond of little old ladies, and when one of them asks him to examine some paintings in her attic, he obliges. He expects to find nothing but some worthless family treasures...but this old lady proves to be the key that unlocks a plot to bilk famous art collectors of a fortune, through forged and stolen paintings. The stakes are high in this dangerous game-and the players stop at nothing, including murder!

Extract: Unexpected Treasure! The girl stared at Mannering. "Do you really want to see those pictures?" she asked, as though she couldn't believe him.
"I do indeed."
"It's dark up there. You'll need a candle."
"I've a torch," Mannering said. "Will you come up?"
The girl shivered, and shook her head. "I won't be more than five minutes," said Mannering. He went up the stairs, his shoulders touching the walls on either side. He pushed the ladder into position before the closed hatch of the attic, climbed up, and raised the hatch cover, holding the ladder with one hand.
Then he saw the hand waiting above the hatch. His hand was raised, holding a heavy stick. Mannering made a grab for the ladder with both hands, then felt the stick crack down on his fingers. The pain was agonizing, and he let go, falling back... .
