About this book/synopsis: This book is believed to be the first devoted to a critical and historical treatment of the Muslim philosopher's doctrine of Prophecy and Revelation and its relation to Islamic 'orthodoxy'. The book tries not only to give historical sources of the philosophers' teaching and thus to show where the originality of this teaching lies, but equally to point out how far the philosophers succeeded in their attempt to integrate the Semitic and Muslim conception of Revelation with Greek Wisdom. The cultural importance of the subject, therefore, lies in the fact that it concerns the central issue raised by the mutual confronting of Muslim and Hellenic traditions and its study sheds light on the fate of the Hellenization movement in Islam Chapters: 2. Prophecy 3. Philosophical Doctrine and the Orthodoxy Concluding Remarks; Index |
