About this film: This video shows the most romantic long-haul railway journey in the world. In 1955 Candian Pacific inaugurated the Canadian, a new train designed to offer the ultimate in rail luxury. It was then, and remains today, one of the longest railway journeys in the world. After years of constant use, VIA Rail took on the daunting task of completely restoring all of the original 1955 stainless steel equipment including the bullet lounge Park Cars, the observation dome cars and bedroom cars. The newly restored equipment was then put back into service on the beautiful northern route of the Super Continental. The result of this giant project is captured in this film. You'll see footage of the original laying of the tracks at the turn of the century, early steam trains crossing the prairies, film of the original 1955 journey of the Canadian and you'll visit the yards in Montreal today and watch the historic rolling stock being restored. You'll also tour Toronto, visit the Royal York Hotel, watch the train being prepared for departure, and join in the excitement as this great trans-continental train leaves westward on a truly spectacular journey. You'll meet the bedroom stewards, the conductor, have dinner "in the diner," sleep in a rolling bedroom, ride in the locomotive and see all of the behind-the-scenes operations of this great train. You'll also visit Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff, Kamloops, Vancouver and Victoria. You'll see the most breathtaking scenery on Earth from the comfort of one of the greatest trains in the world. Doug Jones is the guide on this video

  • The Great Western Experience [top]
Released in 2001 in Great Britain in VHS format by The Television Experience, 60 minutes running time. Rating: E: Exempt from classification

About this video: The Great Western Experience is a rather special video cassette for the dedicated enthusiast, and for anyone with an affection for the old steam railway. For the first time, a professional broadcast production team has set out to re-create the reality of the Great Western Railway in its heyday, shot on the most modern and sophisticated equipment [as of 2001] and to the highest technical standards.

Although all the material is specially recorded today (on the Severn Valley Railway, or SVR), it still provides a view of railway working as it really was, which is so difficult to see on a visit to even the best of preserved railways. This is no superficial television treatment, as the objective throughout has been to recapture all the smallest details of the oftn forgotten aspects of a way of life, which has been so recently lost, but which re-awakens so many happy memories: everything from branch-line goods to main-line expresses, from loco-sheds to shunting yards, from signal boxes to coaling stages, from token-exchanges to turntables...It's all here, and the viewer is invited to spend an hour reliving the colours, sights and sounds of the Great Western Experience

  • Titans of Steam [top]
VHS Video, running time approximately 60 minutes. Rating: E: Exempt from classification
Published (as in video publishing) in 1996 by Arts Magic Limited, PO Box 25, Ebbw Vale, Gwent, NP3 5YG

About this video: For almost 40 years, the 'big four' railway companies and British Rail turned out hundreds of powerful locomotives. This all-action programme looks at those which survived, and those which have found a new life on preserved railways all over Britain.

There are might pacifics of the Southern Railway, including the Merchant Navy and West Country classes who now work on lines such as the Great Central, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) and the Swanage Railway. Memories of the Great Western Railway live on in its Castles, Kings, Manors and Hall, which still operate all over the South West and many of which owe their survival to the Barry scrapyard. The magnificent workhorses of the London, Midland and Scottish Railways (LMSR) steam on all over the country and the preserved locomotives of the London and North Eastern Railway include such household names as the World's fastest steam locomotive, Mallard; the Flying Scotsman and Sir Nigel Gresley - to name just a few...

There are also War Department and British Rail designs (The Standard classes) culminating in mighty tank engines and ten-coupled freight engines.
