. First published in 1960 in Great Britain by Frederick Muller Ltd, in hardback with dustjacket, 192pp, no ISBN.
Original UK retail price: 12/6 net. (12 shillings and sixpence)

Storyline: A man swings by the neck; a girl screams; and a blind man plays the macabre music of the Funeral March. Is it murder or suicide? Sir Henry Tycroft, late Governor of the Fenzi Islands, had made many enemies and there are men rotting in a tropical jail who had good cause to hate him. Tamara Mendez, an exotic flamenco dancer, will inherit the Tycroft estates, and she calls in Barney Hyde to track down the killer. Then Ginetta Tycroft storms into the picture. Lovely and amoral, she is the estranged wife of the dead man and she swears that Tamara Hall shall never possess her inheritance. Barney Hyde and Emeral, his green-eyed secretary, follow a lead to Barcelona and later to Madrid. He meets Ginetta again, stumbles upon the cult of the Spider, and is amazed at the strange love-life of the women of Torreca. Patiently, piece by piece, often in danger, Barney fills in the puzzle-and the final result surprises even himself...
