Storyline: In this installment of Ghote's adventures, Ghote finds himself sent to a small provincial town, a setting that comes delightfully alive (it is not for nothing that Mr Keating corresponds regularly with the Superintendent of Police of just such a locality in the State of Maharashtra). Ghote's mandate is to investigate a death fifteen years earlier, but he has not simply to find a murderer. He is told to pin the crime squarely on the town boss, a figure of almost despotic power. Nor is this all. The local holy man has embarked on a fast-do-death against any investigation. So, as this Swami (who turns out to be a decidedly unexpected person) sinks nearer his end, Ghote, in face of obstruction of every kind, attempts swiftly to find his answer, experiencing in his own diffident yet resolute person the full extent of the adage 'You cannot make an omelette without breaking an egg.' |
