About this book/synopsis: This is a book about money, or rahter about the process by which those who have more money than they need lend to those who want to spend more than they have. This process-of money flowing from persons and organizations-is the key to our financial system. To understand the process fully, information on actual money flows is essential. So, this book is an introduction to the use of financial statistics as well as to the British Financial System.

The first chapter looks at the various elements integral to the financial system - individuals, private industry, banks, building societies, insurance companies, the public sector, overseas people and organizations, etc.; explains the methods by which financial transactions may be carried out; and introduces the statistics which will support the analysis in chapters 2-7.

Chapters 2-7 form the core of the book - here the author analyses the financial system to show how the institutions and the flow of funds actually work. Chapter 7 compares the structure of the UK financial market to a number of foreign financial markets, notably the USA, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Japan. Finally chapters 8 and 9 look more critically at the UK financial system examining the reason for its present structure and asking whether it operates in the most efficient manner.
